Thursday Night Betting Recap:

Updated: Sep 20, 2023

Result: 0-2

Cubs -1 (-110) Loss

Pacheco Over 50.5 Rush Yards (-117) Loss

MLB Record: 75-66-1 (-0.99)

NFL Record: 0-1 (-1.17)

Let’s start with the Cubs. Somehow one of the hottest offenses in baseball made one of the worst pitchers look like a Cy Young candidate Thursday evening.

Ryne Nelson went 5.2 IP, allowed just 2 hits and 1 ER.

In my article yesterday, if you notice, I listed a couple concerns about backing Chicago. Most notably, Javier Assad’s underlying metrics that hinted at regression, along with the Cubbies' struggles in series openers throughout the second half of this season.

Clearly, I should’ve listened to myself.

Assad was rocky early on, but really didn’t put the Cubs too far behind the eight ball.

Chicago had a few hits that looked like they would leave the yard, but the wind kept it in. That became more and more frustrating to watch considering the D’Backs were able to lift a few past the ivy.

Now in the grand scheme of things - for the Cubs - all will be okay. Poor nights at the plate are inevitable; it just really sucks when it happens the night we back the Northsiders against a very poor pitcher.

As for the Pacheco bet, well, Chiefs Coach Andy Reid did us no favors early on.

We know Kansas City has a few tailbacks to choose from, but the understanding seemed to be that Pacheco would be the main guy. That wasn’t the case right out of the gate.

The second-year back ended with just 8 carries and 23 total rushing yards. We were hoping he’d at least get double-digit rushing attempts, but even if he did, realistically, it wouldn’t have made a difference.

And when he finally came out as the lead back in the second half, he got banged up immediately and exited the game.

Now Pacheco eventually made his way back onto the field, but at that point it was too late.

This is why betting, especially props, early in the NFL season can be tricky.

We’ll continue to aim for quality over quantity. We’ve got a whooooleeee season to go, folks.

We’ll be alright.

Be on the lookout for my Week 1 survivor contest strategy, along with my Sunday picks later on Friday.
